Global pigments market to reach USD 14.7 billion by 2018

A recent study by Transparency Market Research (TMR) forecasts that the global pigments market will grow at a rate of 4.5% between 2013-2018. It is reported that by 2018, the global pigments market will report a market value worth $14.7 billion in revenue terms and 4.4 million tons in volume terms.
The report states that growing demand for specialty pigments, expansion of the construction materials market, and the expanding paints and coatings industry are some of the key factors that drive the global pigments market. It is anticipated that the increasing demand for coatings and paints from the construction industry, will contribute significantly to the robust growth of the pigments market in the forthcoming years.
Pigments are dominant components in the overall colorants market and derive substantial demand from several industry verticals other than the coatings, paints, and construction industries. Presently, the global pigments market is characterized by high demand for unique and specialized end-use pigments. Based on pigment type, the market is classified into inorganic pigments, organic pigments, and specialty pigments. Few of the inorganic pigments include carbon black, titanium dioxide, chromium oxide, and iron oxide. Quinacridone, Azo, and Phthalocyanine are some of the extensively used organic pigments. The specialty pigments segment includes fluorescent, metallic, light interference, and thermochromic pigments.
High focus of pigment manufacturers on producing environment friendly chemicals due to regulatory interventions has a prominent impact on the global pigments market. The majority of the regulatory measures implemented in the global pigments market, focus on replacing conventional feedstocks with renewable ones. Stringent regulatory measures and rising raw material prices are the two main factors that hamper the growth of the pigments market.

CLARIANT's waxes reach final of German 2015 Innovation Prize

Clariant is a finalist in the prestigious German business innovation award "Innovationspreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft 2015", in the large companies category. The achievement relates to Clariant's Licocene polyolefin-based waxes, recognized for advancing sustainability in textiles, plastics and coatings manufacturing and improving the environmental profile of a wide range of applications.
Licocene waxes give manufacturers the possibility to use fewer ingredients, reduce manufacturing steps and use less resource-intensive production processes. For example in textiles, close cooperation between Clariant and German coatings and laminate specialist LACOM GmbH, has succeeded in changing energy-intensive, water-based textile coating technology to a less energy-consuming process of hot melt coating using very low amounts of Licocene additives.
Licocene's ability to support more sustainable processing is particularly valued in energy-intensive sectors, such as technical textiles for mattresses, furniture and carpets for automotive and aerospace interiors. They are also used in the manufacture of masterbatches and engineering plastics, as well as in industrial coatings, and in printing inks and adhesives for packaging applications.

Decisive round of chemical wages bargaining in Germany

Talks between the German Chemical Workers Union and employers for the 550,000 workers continued in Stuttgart at federal level.
IG-BCE negotiator Peter Hausmann called on employers to submit a new offer, as he expects more money than the previously offered 1.6% pay raise.
The union is demanding 4.8% more money in a term of twelve months. Employers want to increase wages after two months of vacancy by 1.6% and pay EUR 200 in a so-called "demographic fund".
If there is no agreement in Stuttgart, in the third attempt, an arbitrator is required. The German Chemicals industry could be heading for the first strike since 1971. Previously, two talks at the federal level and several regional negotiations had brought no result.

ALTANA achieves leap in earnings in 2014

The specialty chemicals Group ALTANA achieved significant growth in sales and earnings in the 2014 fiscal year. Sales amounted to around €2 billion, corresponding to an increase of 11% year-over-year.
The acquisition of Rockwood's rheology business, concluded on October 1, 2013, significantly contributed to this double-digit growth. Altogether, acquisitions comprised a total of 7% of the Group's sales growth.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 18%, amounting to €397 million. At 20.4%, the EBITDA margin therefore reflects a clear margin expansion compared to the previous year (19.0%). "2014 was a strong year for ALTANA. We are well on track to continue on our path of profitable growth", stated Dr. Matthias L. Wolfgruber, CEO of ALTANA AG.
The BYK Additives & Instruments division again achieved the highest sales growth in 2014. Compared to the previous year, sales rose by 24% to €857 million. The successful integration of Rockwood's rheology activities contributed 18% to this growth. Adjusted for acquisition and slightly positive exchange rate effects, operating sales rose by 7%.
The ECKART Effect Pigments division generated sales of €332 million in 2014. Here, sales were 1% lower than in the previous year. Adjusted for acquisition and exchange rate effects, sales were also down by 1%. This decrease is due to changes in the product mix with volumes remaining unchanged.
